*Although our sources do not explain why Sample had brought bells to Coshocton, it is a reasonable assumption that they were trade goods or “trinkets” for which the Delawares would trade food.

*Delawares of the Wolf Clan who had moved to the Sandusky. They had never favored the Americans.

*Major Vernon, quoting a Muncey chief, told Colonel Brodhead of the new fort—“in sight of the old one and much stronger”—in a letter of April 29, 1779. As far as can be ascertained, this is the first time the existence of Fort Lernoult was known to the Americans.
